Supporting Children and Young People who have Pathological Demand Avoidance

Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a complex Autism Spectrum Condition characterised by anxiety driven need to be in control.  Children and young people with PDA need a different approach to the ones used with other Autism Spectrum conditions. This course will teach learners how PDA differs from other types of autism. Most importantly the course will teach effective strategies to ensure that those who work with children and young people with PDA can support them to help them meet their potential and manage their behaviour.

Autism: Managing Anxiety, developing mental health well-being

and preparing for change

Anxiety causes lifelong difficulties for many people on the Autism Spectrum. This course will provide understanding and strategies to help manage anxiety issues and promote mental health well-being.  The course will demonstrate activities to help with preparation for change and transition.  There will be an opportunities to evaluate strategies and techniques for promoting relaxation, sensory calming and help with sleep issues.

Intensive Interaction – Building relationships with people who have profound learning disabilities and complex need

This course shows delegates how to find ways to develop relationships with people with profound learning disabilities or Autism. Participants will find ways to get in touch with the individual they support, understand their personal language and give them the confidence and skills to develop positive relationships. The course covers using the ‘Intensive Interaction’ technique with non verbal adults and children with Autism or Profound Learning Disabilities.
